Surrey Physiotherapy’s Ben Austen was on hand recently to support Surrey Stars’ surge to national women’s cricket final this month.

In his capacity as Head Physiotherapist for Surrey Senior Women’s Cricket Club, Ben offered support to the ladies cricket team Surrey Stars who finished in the top three at the recent Kia Super League.

Ben travelled with the team for the tournament, which took place between 10 August and 1 September at various locations across the country, His role was to offer expert advice and guidance from assessing and treating injuries to helping players maintain their peak physical fitness during the games.

After an excellent tournament, Surrey Stars qualified for the finals, which were held on 1st September at the 1st Central County Ground in Hove.

As they placed 2nd in the league, the team – which featured four England World Cup winners in the squad – was automatically placed into a play-off match against 3rd placed Western Storm, with the winner of this match set to face league winners Southern Vipers in the final.

Although Surrey Stars narrowly missed out on their place in the final – their score of exactly 100 runs being overhauled by Western Storm with just seven balls to spare, they were extremely proud of all they achieved in the tournament, which was broadcast to substantial audiences via Sky TV – especially as Western Storm went on to be crowned the 2017 champions.

At Surrey Physiotherapy, Ben uses a variety of treatment methods to optimise his clients’ recovery, including mobilisation, massage and progressive strength and conditioning programming. He has a special interest in injuries of the ankle, knee and hip in both adults and children, but his expertise also extends to the treatment of spinal pain and shoulder issues.

Previously Ben worked as a strength and conditioning coach for Crystal Palace FC’s academy, before progressing to Sports Physiotherapist at the club.  He is currently working towards completing his FIFA Medical Diploma.
