Neck and Back Pain

Nine out of ten people develop back or neck pain during their lifetime. Back pain can be debilitating, affecting all aspects of your life. Surgery is only necessary for a minority of back pain sufferers while the majority use other means to manage their back problem. The risk factors for developing back pain include a family history of back pain, prolonged standing or sitting, heavy repetitive work, obesity, poor general fitness and even smoking.

At Surrey Physiotherapy our experienced physiotherapists will discuss with you how your back pain affects your lifestyle and examine the joints, muscles and nerves of your back in detail. They will identify factors affecting your back problem such as localized areas of stiffness in the spine due to prolonged sitting, a leg length difference or specific muscle weaknesses that have developed over a period of time.

We use a number of methods to successfully treat back and neck pain and these include deep soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation, manipulation, acupuncture, traction, exercise and electrotherapy. No two individuals with back pain have the same problems and therefore individual management plans are developed.

We give advice on

  • Exercises to improve your fitness and strengthen your back
  • Returning to sport and general exercise
  • Beds and pillows
  • Work stations and working positions.
